The Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2 is a Type C (conventional) school bus that was introduced in the fall of 2004. The C2 is a great choice for schools, churches and student activity needs because of its exceptional durability, reliability and safety.
It is easily distinguished from other contemporary school buses because of its sloped hood and a large, curved windshield. The windshield is also sloped back to ward off damaging debris. The corners on the bus's front end are smoothed out to produce a more streamlined appearance. Even the flashing warning lights at the top of the vehicle are made flush with the windscreen. These combined features deliver the best driver visibility in class.
In addition to a unique outward appearance, the bus makes use of modern manufacturing techniques developed in the aeronautic industry. Many joints utilize structural adhesive bonding, reducing or eliminating the need for welds or rivets in many cases. Where required, self-piercing rivets are utilized. These self piercing rivets do not punch through the bottom layer of the metals being joined together, thus reducing the chance for moisture leak paths. The utilization of these combined features makes this bus body very durable and the strongest in the industry.
While the large windshield is an obvious place where there is more window area, other windows have been expanded on the bus as well. These large windows increase not only the viewing area but also increase the size of emergency exits which are in removable window frames. The rear windows and door have also been expanded compared to previous Thomas Built Buses. All of the above enhance the ability to exit the bus in emergency situations.
Another innovation is the introduction of a multiplexed wiring system in both the chassis and body. Multiple electrical devices communicate over the same wires, rather than being individually wired. This reduces the number of wires running through the vehicle, which can help reduce maintenance in the future.
The Saf-T-Liner C2 also utilizes "smart switches" in the driver control panel. These "smart switches" can be rearranged to suit the driver and continue to function without any rewiring or reprogramming. The C2 is available both in school-certified and commercial versions, these units have many options and seating plans to choose from to satisfy any need.
